The country has not yet adopted the euro currency and the debate continues over when, and if indeed it will do so. In recent years the UK has taken steps to devolve powers to Scotland and Wales. The Scottish Parliament in Edinburugh and the Nation Assembly for Wales in Cardiff opened In 1999.

In Northern Ireland, the Good Friday agreement led to a new assembly with devolved powers in 1998. This was suspended in 2002 amid a row over IRA activities. This suspension lasted for 3.5 years. In May 2007 saw the eventual swearing - in of the power-sharing government, ending 5 years of direct rule from London.
