General information

Poland has a proud cultural heritage, it can trace its roots back over 1000 years. Positioned at the centre of Europe, it has known troubled and violent times.

Following the end of communist rule some 15 years before, Poland joined Nato in 1999, and 5 years later in May 2004 it became a member of the EU.

The country has some success in creating a market economy and attract foreign investment, but unemployment is high and incomes are generally low.

The presence of Pope John Paul in the Vatican had a profound effect on the solidarity movement throughout the 1980's. The Roman Catholic Church remains a very potent force in Polish life.
