General information

Bulgaria, a Balkan country with spectacular mountains and a coastline on the Black Sea, was part of the Ottoman Empire for around 500 years. After World War II, the country was a satellite of the Soviet Union for nearly 50 years.

It's bid for integration into western alliances was successful, when it became a member of Nato in March 2004.

Migration

The lure of Bulgarian property investment for foreigners has led to the level of migration into the country increasing.

Some 12,328 foreigners were granted leave of durable residence in Bulgaria for up to one year in 2005 and 1,152 of these were from the UK. UK travellers, who may have been attracted to the country in consideration of the Bulgarian property market, were third in the list of nationalities who gained durable residence, behind those from Macedonia and Turkey.
